their developers. After discussions with your development staff we select the areas
that our client feels are required. The examples and problems we use in the training
are drawn from those they encounter in their everyday environment. The delivery
method and timetable is chosen according to your particular situation. We can deliver
training on-site or via web meetings and it can be in a block or staggered over weeks
or even months.
On-Site Support Staff and Remote Developers
To reduce the time that support calls took to process,
the support staff recognised that they needed a greater understanding of a new
business application. The development team were being distracted from their key
work by queries from the support team.
We ran a series of short courses for the support staff, staggered so that the help
desk was never left unattended. The courses explained both the way data was stored
and how to access it, with a high emphasis on practical demonstration. This was
followed by examples which the staff were able to work though at their own pace.
The course was tailored to the level of database knowledge the staff had. It gave
them practical examples of performing tasks that they would use on a day-to-day basis,
as well as the knowledge to be able to adapt the examples to specific requirements.
The development team was slimmed down by removing expensive contractors.
We helped train up the remaining developers in the skills that had previously been
provided by the contractors. As the developers were offshore, they were not permitted
large blocks of time for professional development. Accordingly, we created a series of
short seminars via web-based meetings allowing them to see practical and directly relevant
examples of the techniques required. These seminars covered improving database performance
and user interface design. Simultaneously we showed good practice in how to make code
cleaner and more maintainable.
